Halifax Trunk Show April 27th-28th

Beautiful ladies of Halifax! I could not be more delighted to be having a Spring 2013 Trunk Show featuring my new collections (including the bridal headpieces) at Lady Luck Boutique in the Hydrostone Market. I would write a longer post about how excited I am to have this event at my favorite boutique in Halifax… but I must get back to making gorgeous pieces!

The Lovebird Files: Chantal + Brian Edition

This edition of the Lovebird Files is very near and dear to my heart. This past August, I had the joy of seeing my younger cousin Chantal marry her husband Brian in a very intimate and romantic Nova Scotian ceremony.

Chantal and Brian had been planning for well over a year for their big day and all of the thoughtful details were every where you looked, from the homemade jam and locally made sweets table by Gateaux Rose to handmade nautical fabric pennants and ethereal flowers. The inspiration behind their wedding was to have a locally sourced, intimate, nautical inspired wedding surrounded by their families and loving friends.

The music (ohhh the music!) was just fantastic! For most of the evening The Booty Boppin Brass Band filled the barn with a wonderful soundtrack that had the guests up on the dance floor, myself included! Brian’s best man, Levin Gillespie,  serenaded the couple’s first dance as well as to Chantal and her father. And as the evening went on we were all treated with the musical talent of The Danger Bees and the lovely Mary Stewart.

I had created a custom piece for Chantal unlike anything I have ever designed before. Her key inspiration words were ethereal, romantic and to make sure there were nautical touches. So, over several weeks I braided, wove and twisted silver wire amongst a range of freshwater pearls, Swarovski crystals and beach glass into an elaborate bridal halo.

Lovebird Files: Jenna + James Edition

When surrounded by a winter wonderland, why not day dream about a destination wedding?  I couldn’t be more excited to share the photos of Halifax couple, Jenna and James who were married last May 23rd at the Majestic Colonial resort in Punta Cana, Dominican.

When I had met with Jenna months prior to their wedding she stressed the importance of incorporating black into her the design of her headpiece (which she also had in layers of her gown.) Using black and white ostrich spine feathers to create the central drama, I added soft white coque, curled biot feathers and hand sculpted sinamay with horsehair elements. And to finish it off I scattered delicate black Swarovski crystals to the detachable birdcage veil. Jenna also picked out a trio of one of a kind feather headpieces for her bridesmaids in a deep purple.

The Lovebird Files: Ali and Dennis NYE Wedding Edition

To ring in the New Year I couldn’t be more delighted to share these gorgeous wedding photos of Ali and Dennis’s wedding from NYE 2012 in Ottawa, ON! I was honored when Ali had contacted me to not only create a sculptural headpiece for herself but also for her three bridesmaids and her beautiful mother. With elements of sculptural horsehair, cut feathers, black french Chantilly lace, metallic braids and pops of magenta.. the pieces became fun party hats to bring in 2012 and to celebrate their big day! Enjoy these exciting photos from Melanie Rebane Photography.

Must Know Mondays: Sian Melton Edition

I get to work with such talented and inspiring people that I thought, why keep them to myself? So each Monday will be sharing my love for these people and letting you know why you need to know them.

SIÂN MELTON

Who: Photographer, Make up artist, World traveler, Writer, Good bud

How I know Sian: Siân and I met in 2008 on a Oh Dina!’s very first campaign photoshoot where she was our make up artist. We remained friends over the years and worked on several projects together (photoshoots, her best friend’s wedding headpieces, etc.) Most recently Sian helped rebrand the look of Oh Dina! and shot the Fall Winter campaign on a cobblestone street in Brooklyn, NY and the headpiece collection in Toronto, ON.  Her vision gave the pieces an edgier vibe and a more fashion forward look.

Why you need to know her: If you take 5 minutes out of each day to check out her blog you will see the world of film festivals, fashion, and  something through her eyes and will no doubt have a smile on your face. Her photography and fashion films are simply inspiring as well!

Fall Winter 12.13 Collection

I really couldn’t be more excited to introduce the Fall Winter 12.13 Collections! After spending some quality time in NYC, I was really inspired by the eclectic fusion of mixing key vintage pieces and accessories with an edgy sleek wardrobe. While I was in Brooklyn this summer we shot the debut turban collection in one of my favorite places, Red Hook, on a cobble stone road with my super duper photographer friend Sian (www.sianmelton.com). Sian also shot the campaign images for the headpieces with Rebecca and Julia in Toronto (because Sian is obviously a world traveler!)

The Lovebird Files: Johanna + Tye Edition

This has been the summer of creating one-of-a-kind pieces for brides that have been part of my life since childhood (which has been such an honor.) I have known Johanna since my early years of theater school and every weekend as a teenager I was part of her family (her sister and I are best buds.) So enough about my history on how much I love this girl, let’s talk about their wedding!

They were married August 18th on Toronto’s Wards Island (which, for those of you who don’t know, is a magical quaint island that overlooks the Toronto skyline.) Here are some photos of their awesome wedding taken. Oh, and did I mention that Johanna made her wedding dress?! Yeah, she’s awesome.

FW12/13 Sneak Peek

Although it is so sad to even think that this summer could come to an end… I couldn’t be more excited to unveil (no pun intended) the fall/winter 12/13 collection. It shot by the ever-so-talented Sian Melton on a cobblestone street in Red Hook, Brooklyn (one of my most favorite places under the sun.) Turban time, danglers, and bursts of color…. oh yes, it’s happening!

The Lovebird Files: Tina + Kyle Edition

This past weekend was rather exciting because I got to see my first cousin Kyle marry his stunning bride, Tina. The ceremony was on the tall ship Silva in Halifax, NS where we took a tour of the harbor on the most perfect day. Tina wore the Amelia style sinamay flower from the SS2012 Collection and her bridesmaids had a variety of one of a kind purple headpieces. It was so meaningful to add some little details to their day.

Congratulations Kyle and Tina! Thank you for a beautiful day and inviting us to be part of it.

The Lovebird Files: Stephanie + Steven Edition

This edition of the “Lovebird Files” is dedicated to the lovely Stephanie and her husband Steven who got married in May in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I had met Stephanie and her fantasic mother at a trunk show at Lady Luck Boutique when she had asked me to create a special colorful headpiece for their vintage inspired wedding. The best part of working on her custom piece was delivering it to her parent’s home and seeing her try on her wedding gown which rarely happens for me. I usually have to wait for the big day to see it all come together so I was delighted to have been invited to be part of the experience.

Mermaid Parade

Last year I had missed the Mermaid Parade in Coney Island and I have been anxiously anticipating it since then. Luckily I happened to be in New York at the time so we threw on our most nautical duds and took off to the best day ever! My friend Sian took the awesome snapshots of the day. ( www.sianmelton.com )
